What is the final step in the oil painting process?

VARNISHING!

This task is probably my least favorite part of being an artist. The toxic smell takes over my whole condo and it’s exhausting. This last step is important as it really locks in the color and protects the artwork for years to come.

Kana’s Return, I painted this piece a couple of years ago after an incredible trip to French Polynesia. I wanted to capture the stunning colors of the water and the feeling of the islands. This painting shows two Polynesian women waiting on the
